In response to Uganda’s requirement for rehabilitation professionals to obtain annual CPD points despite limited learning opportunities, Physiopedia collaborated with professional associations to create the country’s first structured national CPD framework. This initiative uniquely empowered associations to develop and deliver their own sustainable professional development programs.
Under the guidance of international mentor Angela Patterson and national coordinator Herbert Omoding, the project followed a progressive approach, beginning with an interprofessional hybrid training program that brought together all four rehabilitation professions – physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and orthopedic technology. Building on this success, each association then developed and delivered their own profession-specific hybrid CPD course with mentorship support. This phased approach enabled associations to gain confidence and competence in CPD program development and delivery.
From this foundation, associations have moved into independent CPD planning and delivery, applying the skills and frameworks developed through the project to create sustainable, ongoing professional development opportunities for their members.
Key achievements include:
This initiative has transformed professional development in Uganda’s rehabilitation sector from a challenge into an opportunity, with professional associations now equipped to support their members’ ongoing learning needs through locally-developed and delivered CPD programs.
