A recent hybrid learning initiative tailored for occupational therapists has equipped them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, enhancing their ability to support patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI) undergoing rehabilitation in Uganda.
Held over two days on 2 and 3 May 2024 in Uganda, the ReLAB-HS clinical skills training workshop convened 19 occupational therapists from the Uganda Association of Occupational Therapists (UAOT).
Led by Herbert Omoding and Angela Patterson from Physiopedia, the workshop aimed to increase therapists’ competence in treating spinal cord injury patients by introducing them to the International Rehabilitation Education and Training Toolkit (IRETT). The sessions explored various aspects of occupational therapy assessment and treatment for spinal cord injury patients, including the provision of assistive technology.
A major highlight of the workshop was the opportunity for participants to visit a spinal ward, allowing them to gain practical experience in observing and assessing patients with spinal cord injuries. This practical segment complemented their previous online studies through Physiopedia Plus courses, coursework and mentoring sessions, providing a tangible platform to apply their new knowledge.
The dedication and active involvement demonstrated by the occupational therapists throughout this hybrid training has resulted in a deeper understanding of spinal cord injury assessment and interventions. Equipped with these enhanced competencies, they are prepared to better care for their patients in rehabilitation centres in Uganda.
This groundbreaking hybrid training, which included both online and in-person components, represents a novel approach for these participants. Building on its success, the UAOT plans to conduct similar sessions regularly for its members, with the support of the IRETT Clinical Skills training Tool (CSTT) and online learning provided by Physiopedia Plus.
